How to Learn Serbian Cyrillic

You have learned Serbian language for quite a while and you are an advanced learner. You have a Serbian teacher, or you are searching for one. If you already know how to speak and write Serbian Latin, now is the right time for Cyrillic! ЋИРИЛИЦА is not very difficult, you will see.

Take a look at these letters, aren't they adorable?

Some of them are rounded (О, С, Ф, З), some are partially rounded (Б, В, Ђ, Љ, Њ, Р, Ћ, Ч and most of the small letters) and some look like the laid matches (Г, К, М, Н, П, Т, Х, Ц, Џ, Ш).

In my long experience as a Serbian teacher, I used to see the letters as pictures.

When you find yourself on the streets of Serbia, if you don't know Cyrillic, you might have a problem to read the street's name. Even if you do learn Serbian. That is not the strict rule, some streets have also boards with names in Latin alphabet. But don't be surprised if you have just bought a map with street names in Latin letters, and the signs and boards around you are mostly in Cyrillic. Welcome to СРБИЈА :)

If you don't want to get lost...

That is definitely not the main reason to start to learn Serbian Cyrillic.

There are numerous reasons to learn this beautiful alphabet, with or without help of Serbian teacher. We'll go back to that little bit later. Let's first take a look at...

Some facts about the Cyrillic

1) Besides word 'ćirilica' we also use the term 'azbuka'. Those two words are synonyms.

Serbian teacher in primary school more often uses term 'azbuka'.

2) Cyrillic is an official alphabet in schools and other institutions in Serbia.

3) Cyrillic has 30 letters.

4) Cyrillic was created most likely at the end of the 9th and at the beginning of the 10th century.

5) It's named by Cyril, Christian missionary from Thessaloniki.

6) Cyril and Methodius are famous brothers who were on the mission to spread Christianity among the Slavic tribes. Both of them had an impact to the emergence of Cyrillic, the same as their students and followers - Clement and Naum.

So much about history. Let's see now what are the main...

Reasons for learning Cyrillic

- Well, we have already drawn your attention to the graphic beauty of this alphabet. For me, as a Serbian teacher, it always had its uniqueness.

- Very important reason for learning Cyrillic is that it is not only used in Serbia, but also in many other countries. Let's just mention some of them: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Monte Negro, Macedonia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, and also in many countries of non Slavic nations, in Asia. It's not absolutely the same version of Cyrillic in use in all of these countries, but similarities are huge.

So, if you learn Serbian Cyrillic, it will be much easier for you to learn one of these languages, or at least to understand street signs in many countries.

- Cyrillic (or Azbuka) is a perfect alphabet. Now you must be wondering - why?

Because there is always a match between one letter and one sound. On example, the letter Ж will always be the graphic sign for one specific sound, in any word, without exception. The same goes for all the other letters of Cyrillic.

And now the most important:

How to learn Serbian Cyrillic

I have already presumed that you know Serbian Latin alphabet from before.

That is the right way to learn Serbian - to start from what is already familiar. First you learn to communicate, then to write Latin Serbian letters. And then is the perfect moment for - ЋИРИЛИЦА.

By the way, synonym for version of Latin alphabet which we use on Balkans is 'Abeceda.'

Let's now look at the letters of Abeceda:

You are already noticing some similarities among these alphabets? Take a better look:

Pictures are taken from the blogs Slovce and Au sto je skola zgodna, with permission of authors, and you might fine some other useful materials there.

What is absolutely the same between Cyrillic and Latin alphabet?

1) They both have 30 letters.

2) The letters: A, E, J, K, M, O, T. (There are some minor differences in small letters, but capitals are absolutely the same.)

You see, even if you don't learn Serbian at all, you already know 25% of the Cyrillic.

What is similar?

This might be a little bit confusing, but also might be helping:

- letter B in Cyrillic is the letter for the same sound as V in Latin; (examples ВИНО - VINO)

- letter C in Cyrillic is the letter for he same sound as S in Latin; (examples СУНЦЕ - SUNCE)

- letter H in Cyrillic is the letter for he same sound as N in Latin; (examples НОГА - NOGA)

- letter P in Cyrillic is the letter for he same sound as R in Latin; (examples РУКА - RUKA)

- letter X in Cyrillic is the letter for he same sound as H in Latin; (examples ХВАЛА - HVALA)

There is a big resemblance between some of Cyrillic letters and some objects beginning with that letter.

Pay attention to the letter Ж. It looks exactly as ЖАБА (a frog).

And У looks very much alike УДИЦА (a hook).

Visualization always helps, so, try to memorize the rest of the letters by connecting them with the suitable objects. For finding good objects for learning, use a help of Serbian teacher.

Serbian teacher online

When you start your search for learning materials and for the suitable Serbian teacher, you will notice that the offer is a little bit limited, unfortunately. Not so many good websites or teachers are offered. At least, looking from the Google's eye.

I can speak for mmyself that I am a Serbian teacher with wide experience. For more than 14 years I have worked with different generations who have learned Serbian online or in schools. I had a chance to help many students to learn Serbian, in Serbian schools and in schools abroad. To be online Serbian teacher is a unique experience.

When somebody sees the Cyrillic for the first time, to him it might look exotic and difficult. But actually it's not. Because it's based on similar graphic solutions as Latin alphabet.

How can Serbian teacher help you in learning Cyrillic?

Learning new alphabet is similar to learning new painting technique. We start from the beginning - by drawing lines and patterns. By time, with a Serbian teacher's assistance, student feels more confident and liberates his hand.

At the end, these are some famous quotations by poets and novelists who wrote in Cyrillic alphabet. And it's up to you to learn ЋИРИЛИЦА so you might be able to fully understand these words of wisdom :)

Good luck!

Body parts - Delovi tela

Learn Serbian words for the body parts with a help of Serbian teacher.

Serbian teacher online

When we compare Slavic and Germanic languages, we may notice a big difference between words for body parts in these two groups of languages.
Serbian language compared to English is not an exception. But if you are determinate to learn Serbian with a help of Serbian teacher, we may together find some solutions for easier memorizing.
Take a look at the picture of the boy. The only similar words are NOS - NOSE, all the other words sound differently. Some of them have not very easy pronunciation for the beginners in Serbian, because of the "difficult letters" , - ŠAKA, KOŽA, ČLANAK, NOŽNI PRST. Most of these words sound sharp and melodious - LAKAT, BRADA, VRAT, PETA, OKO.
Visualization is always helpful for memorizing. So, I hope that this young boy with a ball will be your helper in learning Serbian, before he jumps into the swimming pool.

Balkan songs with lyrics - Balkanske pesme s tekstom

Serbian teacher online LEARN LANGUAGE BY SINGING

Listening to the Balkan songs with lyrics is a great way for learning Serbian language. (Also Croatian and Bosnian, if we consider them as separate languages.) This choice of songs belongs to the musical mainstream. Serbian teacher's favorites among these musicians are Darko Rundek and Plavi orkestar.

Enjoy in learning with the music!

Đorđe Balašević
Neki novi klinci
Priča o Vasi Ladačkom

Darko Rundek
Uzalud pitaš

Riblja čorba
Nemoj da ideš mojom ulicom
Kada padne noć
Lutka sa naslovne strane
Pogledaj dom svoj anđele
Pravila, pravila

Piloti
Kao ptica na mom dlanu

Bijelo dugme
Ružica si bila
Lipe cvatu

Bajaga i instruktori
Život je nekad siv, nekad žut
Tišina

Prljavo kazalište
Marina
Moj bijeli labude

Valentino
Oka tvoja dva

Parni valjak
Moja je pjesma lagana

Plavi orkestar
Zelene su bile oči te
Život je more

Music has many positive influences, it effects our senses and our internal body processes.
Melody helps us to memorize the words and to expand the vocabulary, especially if we like the song, and listen to it over and over again.

Let me know if you like these songs and for which other songs you would like to know the lyrics.

Best Serbian radio stations online – Najbolje srpske radio stanice

Learn Serbian

If you want to improve your Serbian vocabulary, listening to the alive language is very important. That's why we are presenting this choice of Serbian radio stations online.

Some of Serbian language learners have the opportunity to hear the language in live conversations on a daily bases. If your working environment is Serbian, or if majority of your family are Serbs (or Croatians or Bosnians), that would be your case.
But, much more often, the conditions are just the opposite. Most of my students live faraway from the Balkans and they rarely have contact with live language, except when they have a lesson with a Serbian teacher.

That's why we have the internet! And radio stations online.
Besides the fact that it sometimes eats our time, internet might be very useful if you want to learn Serbian language.

Most of the radio stations in air emit only music, so, I skipped them in this choice.
I wanted you to listen to the talk-shows, educational and cultural programs. Anything where you might hear modern Serbian language

Radio Beograd 202

(fun, music, information)
http://www.radio-uzivo.com/stanica/Radio-Beograd-202
Hosts on this radio station are often relaxed and funny, their language is casual and urban. Recommendation: Radio-show 'Oblak u bermudama' with host Darko Kocjan.

Radio Beograd 2. program

(classical music, literature, education, science)
http://www.radio-uzivo.com/stanica/Radio-Beograd-2
This radio station is really special. They have many scientific and cultural radio-shows in a very high intellectual level. Their guests are experts from different areas - classical music, literature, arts, linguistics, etc.
Often one may hear on these radio waves excellent experimental concerts or radio-dramas.

Radio B92

(news, music)
http://www.radio-uzivo.com/stanica/Radio-B92
This radio station belongs here maybe because of my nostalgia, because it had lost a lot from its previous quality and glory.
Before, it was a symbol of courage in difficult times. Now, I am not really sure. You may check it by yourself.

Radio Index

(music, news)
http://www.radio-uzivo.com/stanica/Radio-Index
The similar description as for Beograd 202; this radio station was the students' radio before, and now they have various shows and very good nightly program.

Pronunciation of Serbian letters

When you start to learn Serbian, some letters might be difficult for pronunciation, because you don't have them in your own language. I am primarily referring to the following: Č, Ć, DŽ, Đ, LJ, NJ, Š, Z, Ž. Serbian teacher online will give you many exercises to practice and improve your pronunciation of Serbian letters.
But first, read the description below, and try to pronounce every letter separately.

Č      ČOVEK, ČAJ    (tongue is touching upper palate; hard letter; č as in English words chalk, chain, charge)
Ć      ĆUP, ĆUTATI   (soft letter; top of the tongue is touching bottom of the lower teeth; middle part of the tounge is mildly touching upper palate and upper teeth; no equivalent in English)
DŽ     DŽEP, DŽIP (hard letter; similar tounge position as č, but you are also moving forward lower lip; many equivalents in English - dž as in gin, and in many names Jerry, John, Jack)
Đ      ĐAK, ĐUBRE (soft letter; the sound is formed when tounge is leaned on upper and lower teeth; no equivalent in English; similar tongue position as Ć)
LJ      LJUBAV, LJULJAŠKA (soft letter, as soft L; no real equivalent in English, but similar to L in milion; tongue is down, touching lower teeth; mouth is half open)
NJ    NJIVA, NJEN (soft letter, as soft N; no real equivalent in English, but similar to N in New York or in news; both lips forward, tongue linned on low teeth)
Š      ŠUMA, ŠAMAR (the sound like when you want to make a silence - shhhhh; as in English shark, shame, Sean Connery)
Z      ZVONO, ZUB (the sound like when bees is buzzing, zzzzzzzz; like in English zest, zen, zone)
Ž      ŽENA, ŽIVOT (the sound similar to Z, but stronger; both lips are moving; similar to the sound in English word pleasure)

Reading exercises in Serbian Latin

The first steps in learning Serbian language are reading exercises.
Serbian teacher recommends that you start with texts in Serbian Latin.
In this blog post you may find poem for children Strašan lav by famous poet and aphorist Duško Radović and short story for children Lutka bez glave by Dragan Lukić.
For advanced readers of Serbian language, we suggest one love poem - Strepnja, from famous Serbian poet Desanka Maksimović and ballad Balada iz predgrađa by Dobriša Cesarić.
Reading texts in Serbian language is not difficult, because of the famous rule - ONE LETTER IS ONE SOUND. The rule applies for Latin Serbian alphabet as well as for Cyrillic alphabet.
In this faze, don't try to understand full meaning of the poems, just enjoy in pronunciation and sound of Serbian language.

STREPNJA

Našto to, i čemu?

Iz daleka samo sve k`o zvezda sja;

LUTKA BEZ GLAVE

Kakav lav?

Strašan lav,

narogušen i ljut sav!

Strašno, strašno!

Išao je na tri noge,

gledao je na tri oka,

slušao je na tri uva…

Strašno, strašno!

Ne pitajte šta je jeo.

Taj je jeo šta je hteo

– tramvaj ceo

i oblaka jedan deo!

Strašno, strašno!

Zubi oštri, pogled zao,

on za milost nije znao!

Strašno, strašno!

Dok ga Brana

jednog dana

nije gumom izbrisao.

Strašno, strašno!

Duško Radović

BALADA IZ PREDGRAĐA

I lije na uglu petrolejska lampa

svijetlost crvenkastožutu

na debelo blato kraj staroga plota

i dvije, tri cigle na putu.

I uvijek ista sirotinja uđje

A jedne večeri nekoga nema,

I nema ga sutra, ni prekosutra ne,

a morao bi proć;

I lampa gori,

i gori u magli,

i vec je noć.

i vele da bolestan leži,

i maj već mirise -

i nema ga mjesec, i nema ga dva,

i zima je već,

i sniježi.

A prolaze kao i dosad ljudi,

a njega nema, i nema, i nema,

i dvije, tri cigle na putu.

i nema ga više.

I lije na uglu petrolejska lampa

svijetlost crvenkastožutu

na debelo blato kraj staroga plota

Dobriša Cesarić

Reading exercises - ćirilica

Dear Serbian language learners, when you are starting with learning Cyrillic, at the beginning it's not the most important that you understand the meaning of all written words.

It's more important to recognize the letters, to pronounce them correctly, to feel the sound of Cyrillic.

Some of Serbian Cyrillic letters are not easy to pronounce, they demand practice and they are different than Cyrillic letters in other countries which are using this alphabet.

If you want to learn correct pronunciation and fluent reading, don't hesitate to ask for assistance of Serbian teacher online.

Serbian movies with English subtitles
The choice of Serbian movies with English subtitles online is not very wide, but it becomes better every day.

This activity should be very useful for the expanding of Serbian vocabulary and it's highly recommended by Serbian teacher.
Enjoy the movies !

WATCH SERBIAN MOVIES WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES ONLINE:

Buffet Titanic - drama

A film made by famous Balkan director Emir Kusturica. His name is a recommendation by itself. Many movie lovers agree that Kusturica gave his best in his early works, like in this movie from 1979.

Balkanski špijun (Balkan Spy) - black comedy

Leading character is Ilija Čvorović, in interpretation of famous Serbian actor Danilo Bata Stojković. As a former political prisoner, now he is suspicious about everything and everybody. The most 'suspicious' is his subtenant, businessman just returned from Paris. Ilija and his brother begin their own investigation against this man because they believe he is the national threat. Their investigation is weird, funny and absurd.

Podzemlje (Underground)

Another movie by Emir Kusturica, with many great Serbian actors - Miki Manojlovic, Slavko Stimac, Lazar Ristovski, Mirjana Karanovic, Mirjana Jokovic, etc. It's a black comedy and it has many surreal and grotesque elements which is providing really unique art experience for the audience. Music in a movie is made by Goran Bregovic, which also contributes to the whole impression. If you like crazy, rough, wild, poetic and Slavic soul movie experience, this one is perfect for you.

Hadersfild

I didn't watch this one, but I heard very positive opinions. This is said on IMDB: Several friends from the childhood lead their normal lives, when one their old friend returns to the city. They all get together, and what begins as a reunion party of close friends with lots of catching up to do, turns into an emotional rollercoaster of dark humor, bitterness, anger, grim soul searching... Through the very personal accounts of their own lives and lives of their school friends, we get to reveal the omninous mark the final decade of the twentieth century has left on them...

Bitka na Sutjesci (The Battle of Sutjeska)

Classic of Yugoslav cinematography, made in 1973. One of the characters is Yugoslavian former president Tito. He was the president almost 40 years and he was loved and criticized. In movies, he is often presented as a hero and that is the case with this partisan movie. The curiosity is that Tito is played here by Richard Barton

Ko to tamo peva (Who's Singing Over There)

Eppic dark comedy from 1980. Many replicas from this movie are present today in spoken language. The bus is starting its journey and people in it are traveling to Belgrade, it's April 5, 1941... Lot of funny characters are in that bus - freshly married couple with inexperienced but passionate groom, ambitious singer and seducer, two young musicians, a clumsy hunter, the character played by Bata Stojkovic, I don't even know how to describe him - stubborn pain in the ass, crazy bus driver and his father... This gallery of characters is making  a specific atmosphere in a movie... Don't miss this one.

Ljubav i drugi zlocini (Love and other crimes)

An unsatisfied woman in her late 30s dreams about stealing the big cash and leaving the country. She meets a petty criminal ten years her junior who has the thing for her, and she asks herself is he the only true love of her life. Main actors Anica Dobra and Vuk Kostic.

Vidimo se u citulji (See You in Obituary)

Unique documentary about the chaotic Belgrade underworld in the early 1990s against the backdrop of wars in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many of these guys shown in a movie ended very soon, as the title implies, on the cemetery.

In general, Serbian cinematography offers a lot to the movie enthusiasts and film lovers. In these movies one may find exciting life stories, acting of high quality and Slavic soul poetics.
